Xiaolangdi, a National AAAA Level Scenic Spot, is 30km to the south of Jiyuan. The world-known Xiaolangdi Key Water Control Project is constructed here.

    Xiaolangdi Water Conservancy Project is a key construction project listed in the national “Eighth Five-Year Plan”. Its initial engineering preparation began on September 1, 1991, the main construction began on September 12, 1994, and it is completed on December 27, 2001 with a total investment of RMB 34.746 billion yuan. It is a large hydraulic engineering on the Yellow River with the largest investment, the longest and the highest dam, the largest capacity, the widest controlled basin and the best comprehensive benefit. It is mainly responsible for flood prevention, ice prevention and sediment reduction of the downstream, and takes account of comprehensive developments such as water supply, irrigation and power generation. Its completion elevates the flood prevention standard of the downstream of the Yellow River from once in 60 years to once in a thousand years that it is an eminent monument in the history of Yellow River regulation.

    In the annual “water and sand regulation”, muddy water rolls and makes a loud sound, and forms the most splendid sand falls in the world. The upstream of the dam consists of high gorges, quiet lakes and countless islands. It is a scenic spot perfectly combining natural landscapes and modern technologies.
