Jiyuan is located in the northwest of Henan Province and the said hometown of Yugong. It is to the south of Taihang Mountain, to the east of Wangwu Mountain, to the north of the Yellow River and to the west of North China Plain. It covers 1,931km2 with a population of 680,000, and is an emerging central city in the Central China Economic District. It was named “China Excellent Tourist City” by Chinese National Tourism Administration in 2000. And in 2006, it became a “National Sanitary City”.

The name of Jiyuan means the origin of Ji River. In ancient times, Ji River, together with the Changjiang River, the Yellow River and Huai River, was called “Four Large Rivers” together. Jiyuan has a long history and culture. It was once the capital of Xia Dynasty, and “Zhiyi”, its ancient name, was famous for its wealth from the Warring States Period to Han Dynasty. The long history leaves uncountable cultural treasures to Jiyuan including cultural relics and remains everywhere and the most ancient wood-structure buildings in the province, so Jiyuan is called a famous city of history and culture in Central China. Many historical legends, tales and fables exist in Jiyuan, for example, Yellow Emperor Offering Sacrifices to Heaven, Nu Wa Mending the Sky, Gun and Yu Controlling the Flood, Houyi Shooting the Sun, and Yugong Moving the Mountain. Many emperors, generals, officials, writers and poets visited and made works for Jiyuan, for example, Bai Juyi praised “Jiyuan is beautiful”, and Emperor Qianlong praised Jiyuan as “famous mountain and wonderful site”.

Jiyuan is located in the Yellow River basin with numerous natural and cultural landscapes including mountains, rivers, hills and plains. “The Most Fascinating Place” Wangwu Mountain is high in altitude and deep in its valley, and consists of magnificence, uniqueness, steepness, beauty and quietness. Wulongkou is called “Ten-Mile Gallery” with Taihang macaque deserving admiration and the medical geothermal mineral spring with the highest water temperature in the inland. Ji River Temple is a classical garden rare in North China that consists of ancient buildings, pavilions, perfect workmanships, weeping willows, clear springs and attraction. Especially that the world-known Xiaolangdi Key Water Control Project is constructed here to combine ancient culture of the Yellow River and the modern culture to constitute the Three Gorges Sceneries of the Great Yellow River combining natural and cultural landscapes including high gorges, quiet lakes, green waters, and harmonious harbors and mountains. Besides, the Three Gorges of the Yellow River called “River South in North China”, Jiuligou called “Tea Road Origin”, and Xiaogoubei called “Hometown of Nu Wa” together form a beautiful picture of tourism of Jiyuan to make it one of the famous tourist destinations in Central China.
